Evaluation of new warnings on cigarette packages

In January 2002, the Canadian Cancer Society released a study – Evaluation of New Warnings on Cigarette Packages – that indicates that the precedent setting health warnings on cigarette packages introduced in 2001 are effective at discouraging smoking.

The survey was conducted for the Canadian Cancer Society by Environics Research Group Limited and was funded by the Institute of Cancer Research of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The national study – conducted between September 19 and October 10, 2001 – surveyed 2,031 Canadian adults aged 18 and over, including 633 smokers.

Results indicate that for a significant proportion of smokers, the warnings increased the motivation to quit, increased concern about health effects of smoking, and increased awareness of the health effects of smoking.
