Cops for Cancer
Committee members of the law enforcement and emergency services across Canada support children with cancer and their families through Cops for Cancer in all the provinces. Caring communities, businesses, schools and families get involved to support Cops for Cancer by supporting established activities or fundraising independently. The type of fundraising varies from place to place but the spirit of giving is the same everywhere.
To find out how you can support Cops for Cancer in your community, please contact your local Canadian Cancer Society office by choosing your province from the drop-down box below.
The first Cops for Cancer program started in 1994 when an Edmonton police officer with a shaved head posed for a picture with a young cancer patient. The officer wanted to support the boy, who was being ridiculed at school because of his hair loss. Other officers joined and Cops for Cancer was launched.
Since then law enforcement and emergency services officers from across Canada have held Cops for Cancer fundraising events for the Canadian Cancer Society. Donations are used to fund cancer research, support programs and cancer prevention initiatives.
The traditional head shave is still a popular activity as hundreds of police, officials and members of the public sacrifice their hair for pledges to support children with cancer and their families.
Today Cops for Cancer is still going strong. As well as head shaves, a great variety of events and activities take place, such as golf tournaments and elite sporting events, in hundreds of communities.
The dedication of law enforcement and emergency services officers and generous communities has helped to raise over $32.8 million dollars.
