Bisphenol A

What the Canadian Cancer Society is doing

The Canadian Cancer Society is committed to conveying accurate information about cancer risk to Canadians. We are monitoring research about whether exposure to bisphenol A can affect the risk of developing cancer. So far, it is not clear whether it does. As research tells us more over time, we will update our health information.

On October 17, 2008, the Government of Canada announced it would proceed with drafting regulations to prohibit the importation, sale and advertising of polycarbonate baby bottles that contain bisphenol A. In addition, the government has allocated an additional $1.7 million to fund research into the health and environmental impact of bisphenol A. We welcome the government's actions in protecting newborns and infants up to 18 months of age, given the potential health risks associated with bisphenol A in this age group. However, we encourage the government to use the newly allocated resources to expand its focus to children, adolescents and adults and to explore safer alternatives to bisphenol A.
