Vancouver Island teacher wins national volunteer award for her "Gift from the Heart" book 06
October
2004 NANOOSE BAY -
Primary school teacher Virginia Brucker recently received a national volunteer award from the Canadian Cancer Society for a book she wrote entitled "Gifts from the Heart." Brucker wrote the book to raise money for the cancer cause after four parents and the secretary at her school in Nanoose Bay died from cancer. The book is filled with traditions, crafts, recipes and suggestions for reaching out to friends and family during the holiday season. To date, more than 22,500 copies of the book have been sold. More than $80,000 has been raised for the Canadian Cancer Society. Canadian Cancer Society Revenue Development Director Jan Bell-Irving has been touched and inspired by Brucker's dedication to the cause. "Virginia is a committed volunteer and donor and we have been amazed by the sales of her books. She is certainly worthy of an award for her inspirational efforts." Gifts from the Heart books are also being sold by community groups and clubs across the country, with monies raised being funneled to other worthy charities. The book can be purchased through the Home and Gift Collection, who are national sponsors of the Children's Wish Foundation. Brucker says she is happy to support all cancer-related causes. "I will continue to support the Canadian Cancer Society with my efforts, while the Children's Wish Foundation will benefit from book sales, too. The more we work together to beat cancer, the better!" The Canadian Cancer Society is a national community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is to eradicate cancer and to enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer.
