Canadian Cancer Society partners with Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to educate women about breast cancer

30  September  2004

VANCOUVER -

The Canadian Cancer Society BC and Yukon Division has joined forces with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation BC/Yukon Chapter to promote breast health and mammograms.

Thanks in part to support from TELUS and the BC Ministry of Health Services, the two organisations have created an interactive educational exhibit that will travel to 26 communities across British Columbia over the next six months. The TELUS Tour for the Cure will promote the importance of breast health including prevention, detection, screening and treatment options.

Canadian Cancer Society BC and Yukon Division CEO Barbara Kaminsky is thrilled that BC women and their families will have greater access to breast health information. "The Tour for the Cure will be coming to local shopping centres, so we know we are going to get a lot of exposure. Our interactive displays will provide easy-to-understand information on how women can help prevent breast cancer. In addition, there will be current statistics, tips on how to make healthy choices and news about current research. It's something that's not to be missed."

Another mandate of the Tour for the Cure is to increase screening mammography participation. Less than 49% of eligible BC women participate in the screening program. According to the World Health Organisation, a minimum participation rate of 70% is required for a successful program. "BC women are fortunate enough to have wide access to mammography screening, so it doesn't make sense that less than half of the target group is getting screened.   It's free and it's available in almost all communities around the province. Whether it's through a medical facility or a travelling van, we encourage women to take charge of their health," adds Kaminsky.
