Cancer statistics in Alberta

Overview of new cases and deaths

An estimated 186,400 new cases of cancer and 75,700 deaths from cancer will occur in Canada in 2012. Prostate, lung, breast and colorectal cancer account for the top 4 newly diagnosed cancers.

In 2012, an estimated 6,300 people will die of cancer in Alberta, and 16,100 new cases will be diagnosed.


Cancer statistics for men in Alberta 

For men in Alberta, prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed type of cancer. In 2012:

  • An estimated 2,500 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.
  • An estimated 1,100 men will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer.
  • An estimated 1,000 men will be diagnosed with lung cancer.

For men in Alberta, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death. In 2012:

  • An estimated 790 men will die of lung cancer.
  • An estimated 390 men will die of colorectal cancer.
  • An estimated 370 men will die of prostate cancer.

Cancer statistics for women in Alberta

For women in Alberta, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed type of cancer. In 2012:

  • An estimated 1,950 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • An estimated 1,000 women will be diagnosed with lung cancer.
  • An estimated 830 women will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

For women in Alberta, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death. In 2012:

  • An estimated 720 women will die of lung cancer.
  • An estimated 390 women will die of breast cancer.
  • An estimated 330 women will die of colorectal cancer.
